[EDU] Dreamhost thread 07 – Hosting for $22.40 for a year + free domain registration
Ok, the old thread was getting too long and bogged down, so here is the new one:
If you have never had an account before:
1. Go here:
2. All the settings should be correct where they are (they should be the following):
- Crazy Domain Insane (165.6GB disk, 1.656TB bw, $9.95/month,
- Automatically Rebill – once a year. (No set up fee!)
- Register a new .com/net/org/info domain for me free!
3. Next you should see the following:
This is where you put in what domain name you want (provided it is available), and where you create a username that you will use to login to your account.
4. Here is what you see next:
The ONLY thing that you should fill in honestly here should be your email address, otherwise you will get a bunch of bullshit mail at your home address, and you are putting your info up on the web for anyone smart enough to run a whois on your site. Create a password, and put in the city you were born in (in case you forget, this is what they use to reset your password). All the other info below the city you were born in line should be fake.
5. This is what you see next:
In the second box where it says, "Promo Code or email of who referred you:" put in the code 97FTW
That will give you the maximum discount possible (your total should be $22.40 per year).
6. Check the "I agree" box, and move on to "Continue to secure payment". If I remember correctly, I’m pretty sure that if you use a Credit Card, you have to fax them a copy of the rubbing on the numbers of the card, you can figure that out on your own.
7. Once everything is set up, make SURE you turn off Auto Rebill. Log into your account, and on the left side of the screen, you should see something that says "Billing". Click on that, and it should expand. Click on "Make Payment". When the middle of the screen refreshes, you should see "Credit Card Autopay – Enabled" in big green letters. Click on it, and when it expands, click on the box that says "I authorize DreamHost to charge this credit card on the 15th" and make sure to REMOVE the check from the box. Scroll down a little and click the blue button that says "Update Automatic Rebill Setting". It will tell you it was successful, and you should be good to go.
8. Upload lots of porn for OT
Sorry to tell you guys, but they have started to wise up. To get the discount, you will have to do the following:
1. Go here:
2. Use a Credit Card number you have not previously used with them before
3. Use an Email Address you have not previously used with them before
4. Create a new User Name you have not previously used with them before
5. Create a new Domain Name you have not previously used with them before
If the above items are not unique to their system, it will flag it, and you will not get the discount.
6. Use discount code: 97FTW

when it comes to your domain renewal (just the domain), according to Pineapple Devil, you can:

ok here is the skinny on renewals.
once your domain expires, you either have to renew it through dreamhost (you can use promo codes for renewals), renew it with dreamhost then transfer it to a new place, or wait 60 days for it to expire and then sign up for dreamhost again. if you try to sign up that same domain it will say that its still in their database and will not let you use a promo code. |
You can not renew your hosting with a code.
I would like to add that dreamhost will accept the "+" operator for email addresses – identifying them as unique.
IE: if you want to use – but you have already used that email with dreamhost, you can sign up with blah+xxx@gmail.com. anything sent to blah+xxx@gmail.com will go to and dreamhost recognizes it as a unique email address (‘xxx’ can be any string)

Can you elaborate on this? I’m going to be using this as hosting for a small website as well for a company. I don’t have any way of faxing anything, and what is a "rubbing" of the numbers? I can’t just pay with paypal or with a credit card?

a rubbing is basically just like when they manually make an impression of the numbers on the card when the automated CC machines are down. It’s just an imprint of the card, that way they can physically tell that the card is in your possession and not stolen. They will tell you how to do it if you have to send it in for verification, but I don’t even know if they are still doing this or not.

What happens when you go over the bandwidth for the company? do they shut you off or do you have to pay the extra?

Ya that might be a problem then cause i use over a gig a day. hmm i know there should be a way to limit the bandwidth per month i could just get it to host stuff on for OT

I have been with DH for many years, and can’t really justify leaving them – some ridiculous amount of transfer is available now for cheeeep (just under 3TB/month now for ~$9).
Pay w/ CC using Google checkout – no rubbing required. 97FTW worked for me.

i canceled my account with dreamhost, per instructions provided in the old thread. my hosting was up, but i still had a month left on my domain name. however, when i attempted to sign up with netfirms and transfer the domain from dreamhost, it called for an authorization #…well, i couldn’t get that because my account was canceled and my domain was no longer listed. dreamhost held onto my domain for another month, then sold it to some random advertisement company.
that advertisement company wasted their money, because my domain used to get like 50 hits a year. i only used it to host large files for friends

Chances are the ad company just bought it up the moment it expired. Happens with almost any domain.

I used dream host for over a year until they caped my mysql quires. I own an online game and it relies on a mysql database, when it hit that cap my site went down.

Create a new account, sign up and get a free domain name. Than transfer over your old domain name.
there is no option to pay by credit car anywhere, even in the web panel.
the only thing they have by CC is by using google checkout, which doesn’t give any option to enter a discount code
They’ve capped the deal to $50 bucks which makes the total close to $70. To hell with that.
Yep, all the 97 codes are now only $50 off.
I’d do this even at 50 off if I could be sure it would renew at the same price each year.
