anyone else use freecycle?
|
The Freecycle Network (often abbreviated TFN or just known as Freecycle) is a registered in the state of Arizona, USA, and separately registered as a UK charity, that organizes a worldwide network of "gifting" groups, aiming to divert reusable goods from . It provides a worldwide online registry, and coordinates the creation of local groups and forums for individuals and non-profits to offer and receive free items for reuse or recycling, promoting as a motivating cultural outlook. "Changing the world one gift at a time" is The Freecycle Network’s official tagline. |
I’ve been using it for about a year. I’ve given away things like a computer, reel lawn mower & misc furniture. I’ve got a small desk & cat nip plants for kittah.
latest find:
You do have to sort over a lot of "I need a car" or "I’m pregnant and need anything for my unplanned spawn." but it isn’t as bad as craigslist
I use freecycle, and I just put a custom mailbox filter. Most of the groups will have a format into which you must shape your requests.
For example:
[freecycledc] OFFER: Free 13" Sony Trinitron Color TV (Cleveland Park)
and
[freecycledc] TAKEN: Office Chair, Cleveland Park
for items up for grabs
and
[FreecycleRockville] WANTED: Lots of packing peanuts
for items that are requested.
I just have the "Wanted" items go directly to one folder, and the Offer/Taken items go to another. I peruse when I want to, and it never bothers my inbox.
I use Freecycle, and it is a good service. It’s not some spammy site like people would think, though there are a bunch of people joining and posting "I NEED A NEW FLAT SCREEN TV PLZ". I got one of my couches, my DVD/book shelf and a small dresser from there, and it was all stuff I needed.
The other problem is that people are vultures; even if you want something comparatively simple (Coffee table, or a cabinet, or a small table to rest a 20" television on), it will get snatched, but free is free.
